Cultural, Community Based Safaris

Community Based Safaris are like putting the empathy in the adventure and connecting with the people who live close to or within the destinations that allure your presence in Africa. Within the communities close to the destinations are organised groups that entertain, educate tourists the African cultures and create arts and crafts that can be purchased by travelers as souvenirs. This gives tourists authentic experiences from places they visit while allowing revenue generated by tourism to remain in the often rural, poor, or economically marginalized community.

Fore example our affiliates, Uganda community tourism association (UCOTA) works to help locals benefit from safaris and tourism in Uganda’s local communities, through encouraging safaris managers to bring travellers to engage in community activities and or donate some of their earnings to organised communities that can improve their lives and foster development in left behind societies. UCOTA also encourages infrastructural development like roads in the communities, and also providing jobs to the local people especially in the hotels, which money helps to improve the lives of the local people. In addition, communities have been encouraged to participate in the development of tourism through encouraging craft making near national parks, museums, heritages among others so that they can be able to earn income to improve their live hoods.

Other community organisations in Bwindi where gorilla trekking is done have changed lives and improved lives of members through community based safaris. For example: Ride for a Woman and Ruhija Community Rest Camp which had no previous tourist accommodation and few opportunities for villagers to earn income, today a percentage of profits from gorilla friends tented camp are returned to support other livelihood enhancement initiatives in the village. Through this they have identified and developed local capacity to participate meaningfully in Uganda’s tourism industry.
